Wednesday March 29, 2017 The Foothills.

The Foothills Golf Club truly represents what desert golf should be and caters to both power and course management-minded players. The par-72 Championship, links-style course, was designed by internationally acclaimed architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The Foothills Golf Club stretches to almost 7,000 yards with lush rolling fairways, blue lakes, and 65 bunkers set against rough rocky desert terrain. With four sets of tees, The Foothills Golf Club has appeal for golfers of all skill levels and has earned a four-star ranking from Golf Digest, along with being listed as one of Phoenix’s top golf courses.

Beautiful morning cool and perfect temp. We ran a shotgun this morning although hardly seemed necessary with 5 groups and a pretty empty course. I was in the second threesome off hole # 1 with Coy Miller and Ollie Wentzel. Ollie holed out a beautiful 60 yard bird today. A shot to remember. Shortly after starting, the threesome in front of us ran away and we were like Astronauts on the Moon, no one in front of us and no one behind us. Loved the course, the lonesomeness, but hated the way I way playing. Guess every player needs a comeuppance every once in awhile. Some played well as Rich Golz was on fire and won with an outstanding 62 net. Way to go Rich. Tom Giljum took second place at 66 net. When he shows up he usually places. Tied at 69 nets were Kenny Baca and Dave Dean. Ken won third place  on the scorecard playoff and Dave got the ever popular and coveted Atta-a-Boy. Course played well I thought. Fairways and Greens were great except I didn’t hit many of them. Next up Falcon GC and 1st round of the Champion of Champions play. Please let Event coordinators know if you want to get in on the action. More info below. Rest of the field scores below too.

Falcon Golf Club opened for play in 1997 and quickly became a valley favorite for first class public golf at affordable golf rates. Brian Curley of Landmark Golf Company designed Falcon Golf Club. Majestically nestled around the Estrella & White Tank Mountains, the front nine is target style with desert like conditions and the back nine is more traditional with bunkers, water, and trees separating the fairways and greens. The golf course plays at 6733 yards from the back tees with par of 71. Falcon Golf Club has been known for having greens and fairways in great condition. Falcon is a great venue for tournaments because the golf course is playable for the beginning golfer yet challenging for the advanced golfer.

2017 VGA Special Event schedule

The Champion of Champions Tournament is a two-day stroke play tournament played on two consecutive Wednesdays and two consecutive Saturdays in the first quarter of the year. The tournament is open to all prior year first place winners of the weekly Wednesday and Saturday VGA events. Wednesday winners compete against Wednesday winners and Saturday winners compete against Saturday winners to determine final competition winners for the overall championship. There is a first, second, and third place winner in both groups determined by the lowest 36 hole net score total. Members can play in both the Wednesday and Saturday competitions if eligible by reason of winning both a Wednesday and Saturday event the prior year.

Final tournament winners for first, second, and third place are determined in the following manner:  The first place Wednesday champion competes against the first place Saturday champion in one 18 hole match. The low net score of the match determines the first place winner of the overall tournament and is declared Champion of Champions. The loser of the match earns second place in the overall tournament. The third place winner overall is determined in one 18 hole match between the second place winner of the Wednesday group and the second place winner of the Saturday group. As with the match for first place, the match for third place is won by the low net score. The time and place of each final match is to be determined by the competitors but must be played prior to the annual awards dinner.

The entry fee for competition is $10.00 paid by each participant to the tournament coordinator prior to the first match. No additional fees are required for subsequent matches. The entry fee money is returned to first, second, and third place winners of each group as prize money for their wins. For the overall tournament, The VGA treasury pays $100.00 to the first place winner, $60.00  to the second place winner, and $40.00 to the third place winner at the annual awards dinner. In addition, the Champion of Champions has his/her name added to the trophy and is awarded the trophy for display until the next awards dinner. 2017 Schedule is below.

Wednesday:  April 5th @ Club West & April 12th @ Aguila G.C.

Saturday:   April 1st  @ Falcon Golf Club & April 8th @ Cave Creek Golf Club.
